There are many strategies, tips and techniques that you can use to fully take advantage of savings at the grocery store. Learning how to optimally use coupons, rebates and more can end up saving you quite a bit of money. Another underutilized tool that can save you money is a grocery price book.

The strategy behind a grocery price book is to compile valuable information that you can refer to when you see an advertised special. You will be able to know instantly if the sale is really worthwhile. You can also determine which stores in your area offer you the best deals for your money and where and on what items you can save the most.
There are many ways to keep a price book and the best way to do it is however it will work best for you. You can just use a spiral bound notebook or even use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of the prices and information.

The idea is to start keeping track of the unit price on your favorite products. When you have a reference as to what the normal price is you will quickly be able to determine if an advertised special is really a good deal and worth going out of your way for.

To get started just get your notebook or computer file and start making notes of the prices that you pay for items. Save all of your grocery receipts for a few weeks and start inputting the price you paid. It will not take long before you have a good record of the unit prices for an item.

It is also a good idea to keep track of the date and the store that you shopped at. That way you will also have a good comparison of the stores in your area. Soon you will start to see the history and you will have a basis for your comparison-shopping. It won't take long for you to discover which stores typically have the lowest price. You will also be able to quickly compare the advertised sales prices to the regular prices you paid in the past.

Make sure that you keep your price book updated and that you carry it with you as you shop in order for it to be useful. It can be a great tool but only if you take advantage of it and use it. At the beginning it will take some time but after awhile the time it won't take too much time at all and the information will prove to be invaluable.

The more information that you are able to compile about your shopping habits the more money you will be able to save all around because you will be able to take advantage of the true sales along with utilizing your coupons.
